The 2nd World Humanoid Robot Games wrapped in Beijing at the Ice Ribbon National Speed Skating Oval on August 26, and it was a spectacle. Over five days, roughly 2,000 humanoid robots from 666 teams across 16 countries competed in 51 events and 1,301 individual contests. Chinese robot Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, ran the 100 meter dash in 8.64 seconds in the final, nearly a full second faster than Usain Bolt's human world record of 9.58 seconds. Tiangong Ultra also beat human world records in the 400 meter at 38.15 seconds, the 1500 meter at 2 minutes 21.64 seconds, and the standing high jump at 2.88 meters. Shanghai-based AGIBOT, competing in its Games debut, topped the overall medal table with 18 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze for 46 total medals. Meanwhile, plenty of robots continued to trip, crash into padded walls after sprints, and in one case catch fire. The future has arrived, and it is still tripping over itself.
