SpaceX shares are rallying Thursday, trading around 114 dollars and up roughly 5 percent, even as the company's first major post-IPO share lockup begins to expire. While roughly 911 million insider shares are technically becoming eligible under the lockup structure, only about the first 20 percent of those shares, approximately 182 million, are actually free to trade on day one. The remainder unlocks in a staggered schedule that continues through December, and Elon Musk's personal shares remain locked until June 2027. An additional 10 percent early-unlock provision, which would have required SpaceX's stock to trade at least 30 percent above the 135 dollar IPO price on five of 10 consecutive sessions before the first earnings release, did not trigger. Options traders have leaned heavily bullish ahead of the expiration, aggressively accumulating short-term call contracts at the 111 dollar strike price. Beneath the unlock story, SpaceX's second-quarter earnings revealed a critical dynamic inside the company. The Connectivity division, which includes Starlink consumer broadband along with enterprise, government, and Starshield services, generated 1.656 billion dollars in operating income during the quarter. That was enough profit to offset more than 92 percent of the combined 1.799 billion dollar operating losses from the Space and AI divisions. SpaceX also secured more than 6 billion dollars in multi-year U.S. government awards through Starshield during the quarter. While Starship development and artificial intelligence spending remain a drag on near-term profitability, the connectivity business is quietly emerging as SpaceX's financial foundation, generating meaningful earnings today while supporting long-term investments in businesses that may take years to reach similar profitability.
