At the VivaTech conference in Paris in June 2026, Amazon and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos pushed back on widespread fears about AI-driven job losses arguing that artificial intelligence will ultimately create a labor shortage rather than eliminate work. "I know there's a lot of concern that many people have, including many smart people, that AI is going to make humans redundant and so on," Bezos said. "I totally disagree with this point of view. And I think, in fact, AI is going to create a labor shortage." Bezos' optimism is rooted in his belief that human ambition is effectively unlimited. "We have an endless set of things to invent," he said. "Today, we are limited not by our imaginations, but by what we can actually do." His remarks came as he discussed Prometheus, the AI startup where he serves as co-CEO, which is building tools designed to dramatically accelerate engineering and product development. The counterpoint is significant. According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, U.S. employers announced more than 97,000 job cuts in May 2026, with AI cited as a contributing factor in roughly 40% of those layoffs. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in June found approximately half of Americans worry that AI could threaten jobs or household income. Bezos' view is that AI, like prior technological breakthroughs, will expand the scope of human work by removing bottlenecks allowing people to pursue ideas and build industries that previously required too much time, money, or technical capacity to attempt.
