Samsung Electronics (OTC: SSNLF) reported record preliminary second-quarter operating profit of 89.4 trillion won, or approximately $58.4 billion, up roughly 19-fold from 4.68 trillion won in the same period a year earlier. Preliminary revenue jumped 129% year over year to 171 trillion won. The result beat the LSEG SmartEstimate of 87.3 trillion won and marks Samsung's third consecutive quarter of record operating profit, driven by surging demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used in AI data centers. The 89.4 trillion won figure worth about $58.4 billion surpasses NVIDIA's previous-quarter record of roughly $53.5 billion, making Samsung the largest quarterly operating profit generator among global tech companies. Despite the blockbuster guidance, Samsung shares fell as much as 10.1% intraday in Seoul before closing down 6.9%, dragging South Korea's benchmark Kospi index down 4.9% and pushing rival SK Hynix 6% lower. More than $80 billion in market value was wiped out. Analysts attributed the selloff to already-lofty investor expectations after Samsung stock more than doubled between April and June, plus renewed concerns over the sustainability of AI infrastructure spending. The Q2 results include one-off employee bonus provisions tied to a May labor deal that eliminated Samsung's previous 1,000% base-salary bonus cap and instead earmarks 10.5% of Device Solutions Division operating profit for worker bonuses; H1 bonus provisions total roughly 17 trillion won. Excluding those provisions, Samsung's Q2 operating profit would have exceeded 100 trillion won. Mass production of the company's sixth-generation HBM4 memory began in February, and Q1 2026 already set a prior record at 57.23 trillion won in operating profit. Samsung will release full second-quarter earnings, including divisional breakdowns for semiconductors, mobile, and consumer electronics, on July 30, 2026. #Samsung #SSNLF #AIchips 🌐 Find more market-moving insights at https://www.benzinga.com — your one-stop destination for the latest financial news, data, and expert analysis to stay ahead of the markets. 🖥️ Want the same tools the pros use—without the $10K Bloomberg terminal?
