During a call on The Ramsey Show, a mother of two explained that she, her ex-husband, his girlfriend, and their adult children were considering buying a large piece of land together and building a shared family compound each with their own home but jointly owning the property. Dave Ramsey pushed back firmly. "I think there's more downside than upside here," he said. "This is one of those things that all of the variables would have to work perfectly for everyone to come out intact." He warned that even a well-functioning blended family relationship could shift over time, especially once new partners, marriages, and shared real estate all enter the picture. "The kid could get stuck in there and/or marries a girl who doesn't want anything to do with this compound," Ramsey said. "Then he's stuck and then we have to have a communal vote like it's communism or something." His caution is supported by data. Research places second-marriage divorce rates at around 60% or higher, and financial entanglements involving shared property, ex-spouses, and stepchildren are widely cited as a significant source of stress in blended family situations. Ramsey did not oppose all versions of the idea. When the caller suggested buying houses on the same block, he approved. He also endorsed a structure where a larger piece of land is divided into separate, independently owned parcels giving each person the ability to sell or leave without requiring group consent. "If you bought a piece of property and everyone had their own parcel that was marketable and everybody's not pissed if they sell it later," Ramsey said, signaling approval of that approach. The broader takeaway from Ramsey: shared assets work best when exit plans are clearly defined before any problems arise. --- #DaveRamsey #RealEstate #PersonalFinance 🌐 Find more market-moving insights at https://www.benzinga.com — your one-stop destination for the latest financial news, data, and expert analysis to stay ahead of the markets. 🖥️ Want the same tools the pros use—without the $10K Bloomberg terminal?
