For most American workers, the answer is yes. In 49 of the 50 states, employers can generally terminate a worker at any time, for any legal reason, or for no stated reason at all. Montana is the one notable exception, having moved away from pure at-will employment with its Wrongful Discharge from Employment Act. Federal law still prohibits firing employees for protected reasons such as race, sex, religion, disability, age, or retaliation for whistleblowing or filing workplace complaints. The challenge, as many commenters pointed out, is that the burden of proving an illegal motive typically falls on the employee, which is difficult when official paperwork lists a different reason. The thread filled up with stories from American workers. One person described working at the same company for 24 years, receiving a phone call four days before Christmas, and being let go, with the person they had trained reportedly taking over the role at a lower salary. "When a business is done with you, they'll discard you," they wrote. The UK woman called the situation "crazy and disgusting." What made the conversation uniquely American was the healthcare dimension. In the UK, losing a job does not mean losing access to health coverage. In the United States, employer-sponsored insurance covers roughly half of the population, which means that for millions of workers, a single termination can mean losing both income and health coverage at the same time.
