Americans Need $2 Million To Retire

BlackRock Chair and CEO Larry Fink dropped a number in his annual letter to shareholders that stopped a lot of people cold: Americans believe they need $2,089,000 to retire comfortably, according to a BlackRock survey. "That's a lot. More than I was expecting," Fink wrote. "And almost no one is close." The data backs him up. According to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances, the median retirement account balance for Americans aged 55 to 64 those in their peak saving years is about $185,000. For Americans aged 65 to 74, the median balance is roughly $200,000. Against a target above $2 million, the gap isn't close. Fink also flagged that a third of the country has no retirement savings at all, no pension, no 401(k), nothing. Even Gen X, the oldest of whom will start retiring within the next several years, is falling behind: 62% have saved less than $150,000. But Fink also highlighted what he called the nastiest, hardest problem in finance and it isn't saving. It's spending. Americans with traditional pensions receive a monthly check for life, with the math worked out by someone else. Millions of Americans, however, will retire with a lump sum and a single brutal question: how much can be withdrawn each month without running out of money? Spend too much, and the money is gone by the early 80s. Spend too little, and decades of disciplined saving turn into a retirement spent afraid to touch the balance. Fink noted that many retirees who saved well end up in that second category, holding back and living smaller than they need to. The takeaway is simple.
