Before Tesla and SpaceX made him one of the most recognizable billionaires on Earth, Elon Musk says he deliberately tried to live on roughly one dollar a day for food after moving to North America as a teenager. In a 2015 interview with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson on StarTalk Radio, Musk explained that he was 17 and living in Canada when he ran the experiment, before later transferring to the University of Pennsylvania. His menu was hot dogs, oranges, pasta, a green pepper, and a big jar of sauce, all bought in bulk. "I figured I could be in some dingy apartment with my computer and be okay and not starve," Musk told Tyson. The point, he said, was not frugality for its own sake. It was a psychological baseline. If he knew he could survive on almost nothing, taking huge swings on Tesla and SpaceX, including Tesla's near-collapse during the 2008 financial crisis and SpaceX's early Falcon 1 launch failures, became mentally manageable. Adjusted for inflation, Musk's one-dollar-a-day budget would be a little over two dollars today, but real-world grocery prices have moved faster than that. A basic pack of hot dogs alone often runs five dollars or more, and recreating his old routine today would likely cost between three and six dollars a day even with bulk shopping. #ElonMusk #Tesla #SpaceX 🖥️ Try Benzinga Pro FREE with a 14 day trial: https://www.benzinga.com/pro/register 📈 Take your trading to the next level with our suite of premium research services and tools: https://www.benzinga.com/services 🌐 Find more market-moving insights at https://www.benzinga.com — your one-stop destination for the latest financial news, data, and expert analysis to stay ahead of the markets. 📲 Follow us on socials @benzinga ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 🔹Free Benzinga Webinars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ2jOJNkDfI&list=PL4k0fH8EgI3YTdqniRmxrvz97w3IQ61rD 🔹Benzinga Pro Tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2FaHhLIrks&list=PL4k0fH8EgI3YMwoBMFXGvVMkgixFymmei&pp=gAQB 🔹Earnings Calls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2-AoCw64Ok&list=PL4k0fH8EgI3buZI5529R53wJUNd9NS4_s 🔹Premarket Playbook: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4k0fH8EgI3ZVRPM7INpG--GvohnBVTnT 🔹Benzinga's All Access: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4k0fH8EgI3bQSn91atO-3lPT4V6Nwsmh 🔹Subscribe To The Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Benzinga ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ⚠️ Disclaimer: Investing in financial markets carries risk, and there are no guaranteed returns.
